We wanted to write a blog post which would show you in a little more detail what’s been going on behind the scenes since the launch of our new No.1914 watch. During the lead up to our launch and the the many months previous, behind the scenes at W.T has been a hive of activity! Two men on a mission to bring our customers a timepiece which carries with it the art of storytelling, the chic uniqueness of limited edition design and a brand which is due to evolve in style and innovation as the next thirteen years unfold.

With a nod to the designs of William Morris, the pattern tells the story of the First World War through the eyes of W. T. Author. The struggle of good versus evil and the knowledge that hope will always conquer fear.

2014 itself has brought about a huge amount of evolution to the W. T. Author brand, our No.1914 no doubt sits at the forefront of that but we’ve expanded in other ways too. At the end of the summer we set up a second studio in rural Shropshire. In amongst rolling green hills and far scoping views, we managed to place our roots somewhere that offered fresh air for the soul and space for the creative process to ensue.

Square meterage has not only enabled space to breathe but also space for our growing business to sit tall as we spend time analysing what’s been and planning for what’s to come. Man sheds and barns in the sticks also lend themselves to being able to accommodate big van deliveries. With the dispatch of pre-order watches just weeks away, the stock of fulfillment items really are hotting and stacking up! This week we’ve taken delivery of a huge palette of our exciting new packaging boxes, complete with stunning one-colour litho print, made and printed in Britain.

Not only that but our handmadescreen prints are also in stock ready to be packaged with the watches themselves. Each will be numbered to correspond with the watch edition, and in keeping with our standard established last year, each will be signed and numbered by hand too. We’re still waiting on delivery of our Chapter II book (included and personalised with every purchased watch), we continue our W. T. Author story-telling with the quote:

But after many late nights and proof checks (a bit of fun in between of course!), we have seen Chapter II and we’re happy to share it with you. A sneak peek of some of the shots included in the book, our new rural setting has provided the right scenery for this, as you can see!

With the exciting new additions also comes new developments. As some of you may know the 1914 draws inspiration from World War One, an era where intensified warfare made digging about in one’s pocket for a watch far too time-consuming, and so the trench wristwatch was introduced. Tipping our hat with deep respect to the First World War Centenary this year, we have developed the aesthetics of the pocket watch even further into the realms of the modern wristwatch. Our 1905’s signature brazed lugs have been shifted to extend directly from the side of the bespoke case allowing a more refined ‘No. 1914’. To complement this, more refined hand-made leather straps too.

We really do make each and every strap by hand in our studio, teaming up with some of the most amazing craftsmen to make this happen. We now have our very own custom made tooling, having been tweaked, tightened and titilated along the way, we have been able to make the way that we do things beautifully distinctive. We know there’s are no other tools the same as ours in the world and that’s the way we like it!
